There are wonderful views from other properties on St. John, but here at Maison Miele, you are actually IN the view! The translation for Maison Miele is "Honey House", and the home was built as a special retreat for the owner's wife, Honey. His love for her shows at every turn. There are few adornments at Maison Miele, which makes it a perfect compliment to the spectacular waterfront location. Living is all on one level with easy access to the guesthouse and swimming pool. At Maison Miele, you can expect complete privacy and tranquility.
Sculpted gardens and paved paths are a small part of the ambiance that immediately immerses guests into another world at Maison Miele.
Maison Miele's main house entrance is framed by a welcome shade pergola. The courtyard beneath is a perfect area for relaxation and contemplation.
Just inside, hallways lead to the main house's two bedroom wings. An elegant glass dining table, with seating for six graces a portion of the great room.
But, it's the stunning views that will grab your attention and keep you invited throughout your stay. With wall-to-wall windows on three sides of the living room, it's understandable!
The splash of color in the living room is a perfect compliment to the serenity of the ocean and comes from the Sloop Jones slipcovers, custom made and hand-painted on the east end of St. John.
Maison Mielle's kitchen boasts a large sub-zero refrigerator and a separate sub-zero freezer along with all of the other expected kitchen amenities. With a large kitchen island and wrap-around views, the finest chefs will be at home here.
Remarkable views carry on throughout the villa, as here in the north bedroom. Each charming bedroom suite has a king bed and an adjoining bath.
The king bed in the south bedroom can also be split into two twins. And, there's also a sleeping alcove off the great room, with a full sized futon.
Both bathrooms in the main house are spacious and have an open airy feel. One has bath/shower combination and this one has a glass shower enclosure. In an adjacent hallway is a closeted washer/dryer for guest use at Maison Meile.
This 8x30 foot swimming pool on the south side of the main house is hardly necessary. As seen from the deck of the guest house has plenty of lounge chairs and floats for idling away an afternoon at home.
A swinging hammock awaits you in the garden area on the north side of Maison Miele, where you can daydream while butterflies and hummingbirds dance nearby.
A separate guest cottage at Maison Miele, with king sized bed and air conditioning, is located just a short pathway away from the main house. The guest cottage also has expansive views of both Friis Bay itself and the ocean views to the east.
There's even a complete kitchen with indoor dining in the guest cottage. A full bath makes the guest cottage a perfect addition at Maison Miele.
The pool is easily accessed from both the guest cottage and the main house via simple paved paths. No matter which direction you turn, there is beauty and tranquility all around at Maison Miele.
For those needing total privacy, Maison Miele is as good as it gets on St. John! With it's understated architectural beauty and simplistic furnishings to compliment the stunning surroundings, Maison Miele has no peers.

Maison Miele was a welcoming and relaxing setting for our inter-generational family vacation, with five of us ranging in age from mid-twenties to eighty. This was our first trip to St. John, and we really appreciated the rep who met us at the ferry. After we picked up our rental car and groceries for breakfast, she gave us a quick course on island life and led us across the island to our vacation villa, pointing out important features along the way. How would we ever have found the right driveway (dirt road) without her? Fortunately the short road to Maison Miele is not steep, just very bumpy. The style of Maison Miele and its guest house is attractive and understated. The blue fabrics echo the house's main attraction for us-- the expansive and awe-inspiring view! During the day, we watched the changing scenery of the bay, with white clouds against blue sky and the occasional sailboat against the islands on the horizon. At night, we watched the moon as it waned and marveled at how many stars we could see against the black sky. This is not to say that we spent all our time gazing at the view! We fell into a routine of leisurely breakfasts, an excursion to a different beach every morning, home for a late lunch and then a variety of afternoon activities. Reading by the pool or in the hammock was popular, but so was horseback riding near Coral Bay, hiking to Rams Head or visiting the Annaberg Plantation Ruins. The kitchen at Maison Miele is well equipped and invites cooking in. Miss Lily's grocery and the Love City Mini-Mart supplied us with enough for dinner when we didn't want to drive to the larger grocery stores in Cruz Bay. The house is close to Miss Lucy's and Cafe Concordia, both restaurants that we enjoyed. The gardens at Maison Miele are lovely, with bright bougainvillea and other plants we couldn't identify, tropical hummingbirds flitting around, and the occasional gecko or hermit crab. Following directions, we were careful to close the gate when we left the house, in order to prevent the wandering bands of goats from enjoying the garden in a different way. (Their bleating woke some of us up at night.) If there was any negative about Maison Miele, it was that we needed to drive everywhere, even to take a walk. The road along Coral Bay is twisting, narrow and hilly. And there's no access from the house down to the water's edge -- it's a twenty foot cliff. Finally, as I examined my itchy arms and legs once I returned home, I really wished that I had heeded all the local advice to apply insect repellent as regularly as sun screen. But these were minor inconveniences. Overall, Maison Miele was a great setting for a memorable vacation.
